How sustainable is an exhibition whose exhibition architecture, information materials, events, or subsequent renovation only last a few weeks? Especially in the case of short runs, the effort and benefits are often out of proportion, resulting in high resource consumption.
The workshop “Sustainable Exhibition Practice” therefore asks: How can sustainability be taken into account in the conception and planning stages? How can existing spaces and materials be used sensibly, processes be designed to conserve resources, and new artistic perspectives be opened up at the same time?
Students, postgraduates, and interested parties who would like to gain insights into exhibition production, critically reflect on their practice, and further develop it based on sustainability aspects are invited to attend—whether in the operation of an art space, the organization of exhibitions, or the realization of their own works.
The two-day workshop combines theory and practice: First, the basics and examples of sustainable exhibition practice will be presented and discussed. Participants will then apply the knowledge they have acquired, develop their own concepts, and test improvisational methods. The aim is to combine reflection and action and develop strategies for a sustainable exhibition culture.
Malene Saalmann is a certified system designer and research assistant at the Kassel Art Academy, where she is pursuing a doctorate in sustainable consumption practices. She previously worked for documenta fifteen and FREITAG, focusing on production and material cycles. Katja Lonzeck is the artistic workshop supervisor of the Sustainability Workshop at the HFBK Hamburg and a certified system designer. As a freelancer, she designs textile art objects, including for documenta fifteen, where she also worked as a project coordinator. From 2020 to 2025, she was involved in Autohaus Autohaus e.V., where she initiated numerous exhibitions and events.
Registration opens on December 1, 2025 here.
