Performance Vortrag

Pluralize and Specify

Extended Library, HFBK Hamburg

Taking Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s mantra as a starting point, Slavs and Tatars’ summer 2026 seminar „Pluralize and Specify“ focuses on the role of reading as a generative form of making art in a world increasingly hostile to it. For much of its history, reading has been a collective and performative act. For millennia, texts have been recited, delivered to crowds, and experienced as a social body. Only in recent centuries have we become accustomed to understanding reading as a private, individual, and silent act.

In our age of rampant disinformation and increasingly fragmented, molecular attention, “Pluralize and Specify” proposes to reexamine the potential of reading—in a broader sense—to create spaces for social cohesion. How does hospitality function as a discursive but also affective practice? How can the analytical and intimate act of contemporary reading be translated into a phenomenological and public act?

On the occasion of the guest professorship, Slavs and Tatars will curate a small programme of lecture performances at the Extended Library of the HFBK

Performance Vortrag

+ Transliterative Tease (2013–present)

18:00 Uhr Extended Library, HFBK Hamburg

Lecture performance by Payam Sharifi / Slavs and Tatars

Through the lens of phonetic, semantic, and theological slippage, Transliterative Tease explores the potential for transliteration – the conversion of scripts – as a strategy equally of resistance and research into notions such as identity politics, colonialism, and faith. The march of alphabets has always accompanied that of empires – Arabic with the rise of Islam, Latin with that of Roman Caholicism, and Cyrillic with the Orthodox Church and subsequently communism. This lecture-performance attempts not to emancipate peoples or nations but rather the sounds rolling off our tongues.

+ Circassian Beauty

18:00 Uhr Extended Library, HFBK Hamburg

Lecture performance by Elif Satanaya Özbay

Elif Satanaya Özbay (NL/TR) works across performance, installation, and script-based forms. Through montage and unstable narration, she explores horror, beauty, and archival research, investigating how bodies are staged and aestheticized within systems of spectacle and modern visual culture, moving between myth, cinema, and displacement.
