Application PhD in Art Practice
The interdisciplinary program enables graduates to perform independent artistic research in accordance with international standards and to take on coordinating and leading functions in teaching and in the art world.
The doctoral program in Art Practice can be completed in the various artistic departments of HFBK: Sculpture, Design, Film, Painting/Drawing, Stage Design, Time-Related Media, Graphics/Photography. The applied research topics and methods are to be related to the contemporary and historical practices and theory of the focus areas.
The curriculum is taught in German and English.

Admission requirements
Admission to doctoral studies requires a successful (usually at least an overall grade of “good”) Diploma, Meisterschüler or Master's degree with an artistic-practical focus from a German university or an equivalent degree from a foreign university. Exceptions require the approval of the doctoral committee.
A further requirement is proof of special ability for artistic-research work. This can be demonstrated by corresponding study components in the degree course already completed, artistic research projects, scholarships, internships or work experience.
Applicants who have completed their studies at a foreign university must provide the doctoral committee with proof of the equivalence of their degree in accordance with the first paragraph.
Application & Dates
Applications are only possible for the summer semester. The following application steps are required during the application period for the summer semester 2026 from September 1 to October 14, 2025, 4 p.m. (deadline).
Step 1: Online application
Please create an applicant account in HISinOne. If you then start an application, it will receive an application number, which you should refer to if you have any questions.
Step 2: Digital application
If you have submitted your online application, an upload link will be available in your applicant account.
Upload your digital application portfolio by October 14, 2025, 4 p.m. at the latest (cut-off deadline) together with the listed documents (each document as a single pdf document) and named (e.g. summary, exposé, university degree, CV) in German or English.
In addition to the application for admission, the following documents must be submitted in German or English in a form specified by the HFBK Hamburg:
- a summary of the planned work of at least 15 lines (3 pages recommended, font size 12),
- a portfolio outlining the artistic research practice with regard to the planned work; the methods, media and formats of the work must be evident from this; the sources and aids used must also be stated;
- the proof required for admission to doctoral studies in accordance with § 4 of the regulations for the PhD in Art Practice (proof of university degree, proof of special aptitude for artistic-research work, proof of equivalence of a degree from a foreign university, if applicable);
- a curriculum vitae;
- a proposal for a supervisor and a proposal for a second supervisor in accordance with § 6 of the regulations PhD in Art Practice;
- a statement as to whether the applicant has already undergone a doctoral procedure elsewhere or has applied for such a procedure and, if so, with what result;
- a declaration that the applicant is familiar with the applicable doctoral regulations for the PhD in Art Practice and has taken note of the guidelines for ensuring good artistic and academic research practice at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts.
The file size is limited to 30 MB. It is not possible to submit a physical application folder. Late, incomplete applications and/or applications received by e-mail or documents submitted later cannot be considered.
All documents/work uploaded with the digital application portfolio will be considered for your application to the HFBK Hamburg. Links to external platforms will not be considered.
