The HFBK Boutique is a new exhibition space located in the heart of the city center, provided to HFBK Hamburg by MediaMarkt. The HFBK Hamburg regularly uses the space to showcase artistic works by its students and graduates.

Situated on the ground floor in a prominent position next to the entrance, the glass-walled room is available—initially for one year—for artistic presentations from HFBK Hamburg. In two-month micro-residencies, graduates “occupy” the space with their exhibitions and contribute to the exploration and commentary on the changing structures of the inner city.

The synergies and interactions between this new HFBK location, MediaMarkt, and the surrounding inner-city area near the central train station have become clearly noticeable through past exhibitions. This is uncharted territory, sure to offer some surprises. After all, this central location reaches an audience that rarely finds its way to established art institutions.

The goal is to reduce entry barriers and make the world of art more accessible. The challenge lies in finding a balance between low-threshold offerings and complex (artistic) content. In doing so, the space becomes a site for dialogue and engagement, where art directly enters people’s everyday lives. In the long term, this new space could establish itself as a hub—not only for presenting art but also for discussing social issues such as gentrification, homelessness, and poverty.
