Tips & tricks for the semester abroad (as of 2021/22)
| It’s all about the money (!?) | Jung Min Lee: A solid financial plan and physical proof of support from family members are required, especially since the living costs in the US was one and a half times more expensive than compared to Germany. And you must have good English communication skills. |
| Where and how can you experience art and culture(s)? | Naomi Sam: LA museums and galleries are something spectacular. There are a variety of beautiful gardens and nature parks, deserts and beaches, which are a must-see. As a foreigner, I did feel very welcomed there. |
| Good to know! What should I bear in mind at the university? | Asma BenSlama: The access to different departments and the openness between classes made the conversation around my work in the class meeting rich and cross-disciplinary. However there is no obligations of choosing one class and one professor, but you can access different critique class and most students would choose a professor that connects more to their medium/department. Every thursday there is a gallery night, where all galleries at CalArts are open, mostly thesis shows of students or mid-res shows. Added to that multiple rooms or spaces are open for performances or music, since CalArts have a very important department of Music. |
