The main building of the HFBK is a listed building and is therefore mostly but not completely barrier-free for people with reduced mobility. Barrier-free access with a step-free connection to the passenger lift to all floors is located at the side entrance at Uferstraße 1—along the part of the building that runs parallel to the Eilbek Canal. A barrier-free WC is located on the ground floor and can be opened with a Euro key. The ground floor can be reached without steps via the side entrance at Uferstraße 1 and the passenger lift from the basement to the ground floor.

The nearest barrier-free stops of the Hamburger Verkehrsbund (hvv) are the underground and suburban railway stations Mundsburg (U3), Wartenau (U1) and Landwehr (S1). You can also reach the HFBK from the bus stations Uferstraße and U Wartenau, where lines 25 and 172 stop. Barrier-free access with a step-free connection to the passenger lift to the ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor and 3rd floor is located at the rear entrance—accessible via the passage to the Kallmeyer & Nagel car park. There is no barrier-free WC in this building.
