Lecture series: Anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism in art
In the summer semester, the Theory and History department is organising a lecture series on anti-Jewish and antisemitic motifs and institutional practices in the field of art from the Middle Ages to the present day.
A critical look at the history of the visual arts shows that anti-Jewish motifs and antisemitic stereotypes can be found in many forms since the 13th century at the latest, for example in medieval architectural sculpture, book illustration and altarpieces. However, defamatory depictions fuelled by hatred and antisemitic resentment are by no means limited to the Middle Ages, but can be found in the art of the early modern period as well as in modern and contemporary art. This contrasts with Jewish self-images.
The aim of the lecture series is to examine these phenomena in their respective historical contexts using selected examples and to raise awareness of antisemitism in art. International speakers as well as representatives from the Theory and History department will speak.
Students of the HFBK Hamburg can earn credit points by regularly attending the lecture series.
The lectures always take place on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 pm in the HFBK lecture room (r229).
