Die Ausstattung der Welt
The film explores the three large prop houses in Studio Babelsberg, in the delicate Props Fundus Berlin and at FTA Props in Hamburg, each of which is a world of its own with its very own order of up to 100,000 things. Lamps, cups, sofas, flags, toy fish, plastic flowers, clocks and oil paintings unfold their versatility. They are packed, re-sorted, photographed, "digitised" and put online as a description, search term or photo. We hear the passionate reports of the Fundus experts on the right choice of props and see the objects' excursions into the "furnished world" - they appear in films from Kolberg to Großstadtrevier, Finsterworld to Sonnenallee. At the same time, the film explores the postcolonial history of things - embodied by BiPOC activist Thelma Buabeng, who slips into the role of a PhD student in postcolonial studies who works in the Fundus. She discovers a parallel everyday life of African objects - colonial originals, airport art, enigmatic or racist objects and finally the portrait of an "African Woman Holding a Clock", which arrives in the present day in the course of the film.
