Panel Discussion

Thomas Demand in conversation with Nirith Nelson

7:00 pm Extended Library, HFBK Hamburg

Drawing on their collaborative work on Thomas Demand’s solo exhibition “The Stutter of History” at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem in 2023/2024, curator Nirith Nelson and Thomas Demand reflect on the dynamics of collaboration between artist and curator. How do exhibitions emerge through dialogue? What roles do artists and curators assume in the process of conceiving, developing, and presenting an exhibition? And how do questions of authorship, responsibility, and interpretation shift in the course of such a collaboration?

Drawing on their specific experiences, the two discuss the exhibition’s origins, the development of its presentation, and the productive relationships of closeness that shaped the project and distinguished this version of the exhibition from its previous iterations. In doing so, the conversation offers insights into the often invisible processes of negotiation that take place between the artwork, the space, the institution, and the participants involved.

The conversation will take place as part of Nirith Nelson’s workshop at the HFBK Hamburg and is open to anyone interested.

Nirith Nelson is a contemporary art and design curator and art educator. She teaches Curatorial Studies at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and is Curator of Contemporary Art at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
