Examination scholarship for foreign students
Are you a foreign student and in the examination phase with a residence permit only for the purpose of studying? Your financial resources have been used up or you can no longer work so much on the side because you need your strength for your thesis?
The city of Hamburg will again provide financial means to support you. The Studierendenwerk Hamburg will carry out the application procedure and is therefore your contact partner.
Current application deadline is June 15, 2026.
Requirements
Your financial situation is tense. This means that you do not have the necessary financial means to cover your monthly costs. Your family cannot support you financially and you do not receive sufficient funds from other donors, e.g. scholarships from other organisations, or BAföG.
You are expected to complete your studies within 12 months. One of your professors will confirm that.
Application procedure
For students of the HFBK Hamburg the Amt für Ausbildungsförderung (BAföG-Amt) – Examensförderung für ausländische Studierende is responsible. We will send you the application forms by email upon request. The application round takes place twice a year. Applications can be submitted by the following deadlines:
Application period: 01.05.2026 – 15.06.2026
Funding period: 01.07.2026 – 31.12.2026
Application period: 01.11.2026 – 15.12.2026
Funding period: 01.01.2027 – 30.06.2027You submit the forms (including the forecast of a professor) and the required documents (e.g. account statements) completely via email to the end of the deadline.
The responsible funding committee will make the decisions. Depending on the amount of available funds, the number of applications and the income situation of the applicants, the amount of the scholarship can vary considerably. You will be informed about the outcome. If the grant is accepted, we will transfer the stated amount to your account on a monthly basis.
The funding period is from 01.07.—31.12. or from 01.01.—30.06.
