The library is one of the workshops of the HFBK Hamburg, as it is understood as a place whose media collection inspires and catalyzes the artistic process. It enables students to contextualize their artistic projects in terms of art theory, art history, and media-specific aspects, and to critically reflect on their artistic and creative approach.
The library’s collection focuses on 20th and 21st century art, with an emphasis on monographs by international artists and thematic exhibition catalogues.
This offers students the opportunity to discover both the canon and lesser-known positions in art history, as well as currently debated positions, and to examine them as points of reference for their own work. The library also holds a collection of more technical publications for informed work with the various materials and machines in the other workshops. The reading room is a space for concentrated reading, while the Extended Library is a place for exchange and events. In addition, students present their artistic work in display cases or as site-specific interventions.
